Overview

A person with the surname Dunbar is most-likely directly or indirectly connected with the descendants of the Earls of Dunbar and the location of Dunbar Castle and Dunbar town in Scotland. The author refers to those individuals descending from the Earls of Dunbar as the “House of Dunbar” because its history shows that it was more than an extended family or Scottish clan. The Earls of Dunbar were members of the nobility with a line of descent from ancient Scottish and English kings. The author has previously published a book entitled House of Dunbar, The Rise and Fall of a Scottish Noble Family, Part I: Rise of the Earls of Dunbar. The House of Dunbar Part I book was written from the perspective of an American with the surname of Dunbar, who was searching for his family roots in Scotland. The House of Dunbar Part I book presented the results of the author’s research on the history of Scotland and the House of Dunbar ancestors and descendants with the Dunbar surname. The House of Dunbar Part I book covered the time period associated with the “Rise of the Earls of Dunbar” for over 400 years in the 11th to 15th centuries from 1072 until the forfeiture of the Earldom of Dunbar in 1435. This second book, which is entitled House of Dunbar, The Rise and Fall of a Scottish Noble Family, Part II: After the Fall of the Earldom of Dunbar, covers about 300 years after the forfeiture of the Earldom of Dunbar in the year 1435 until the mid-1700’s when Scotland became part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and was no longer an independent country. The history and genealogy of the House of Dunbar branches and Barontecies remaining in Scotland from the 1700’s to the present-day time period are also presented. The House of Dunbar books are a combination of Scottish history, House of Dunbar genealogy, and travelogue information from the author’s additional trips to Scotland and illustrations of relevant locations important to the House of Dunbar history.
