Details
Referred to as “the greatest 20th century writer in English” by the Chicago Tribune, Aldous Huxley has written seminal works like The Doors of Perception and Island. Many of his works are hailed for their complexity, creativity and language, but Brave New World has been a classic since the early 1900s and part of many higher education curriculums. With its strong and somewhat harrowing dystopian themes, this title has been compared to other classic titles like George Orwell’s 1984. From the very beginning, we learn how the World State is drastically different from our current society. People are being modified and separated from birth, with five different classes of people being bread using genetic modification. Those born as Alphas will be the leaders of World State, while the Epsilons only have the potential for physical labor and small tasks. It’s in this laboratory of creating future citizens that we’re introduced to some of the main characters of the novel, like Lenina Crowne and Bernard Marx, who both work at the factory. It’s not until they leave the World State to go to the drastically different and archaic Savage Reservation that they meet John, who is one of the ostracized member of the reservation. From there, we see how each of the characters struggles with the utopian World State and their attempt to find their place within it. Due to its mature themes, this title is recommended for readers fourteen years or older.
